Light Reading: Scriptures That Work in the Dark

Written by Pastor Muchow

Last night our family and many others had the power go out.  This outage, along with the resultant darkness, presents feelings of uncertainty and inconvenience.  As a Christian, this power outage presents an opportunity to trust and rely on God, despite the discomfort of this outage.  God’s Word is comforting and calming, transforming and restorative.  His Word exposes and forgives our Sin.  His Word assures us of His presence and compassion.  His Word has the power to push all evil aside (I always love that one line from Luther’s, “A Mighty Fortress” which states, “This world’s prince [the devil] ay still Scowl fierce as he will, He can harm us none.  He’s judged; the deed is done; One little Word can fell him.”  So, in light of the power of God’s Word, I leave you with some passages that might resonate with the experience of being without power, focusing on themes of light in darkness and reliance on spiritual rather than physical power:

Psalm 139:11-12 – “If I say, ‘Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,’ even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.” This passage speaks to the omnipresence of God, suggesting that even in physical darkness, God’s presence is as illuminating as daylight.

John 8:12 – “When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’” This verse can be comforting, implying that spiritual enlightenment and guidance are always available, even without physical light.

Psalm 18:28 – “You, Lord, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light.” This is a declaration of faith in God’s ability to bring light and clarity, especially in difficult times.

2 Corinthians 4:6 – “For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.” This passage suggests that the spiritual light and wisdom from God transcend physical circumstances, illuminating the believer’s heart and mind even in dark times.

These 4 verses are hardly exhaustive.  They simply reveal God’s power to transform and oversee every situation.  He is with you.  He will bring good out of this time.  He will bless you rather than disappoint you.  May God keep you safe and may God look after all the people who are fixing this power outage.  May they and their families find safety as they seek to help others try to “get things back to normal.”
