This Tuesday, July 22nd, we commemorate Mary Magdalene, the first witness to the Resurrection and a herald of Jesus’s triumph who bravely shared this news with the disciples. Martin Luther, in reflecting on the Gospels, embraces her past by referring to her as “a sinner,” yet uplifts her as a symbol of true repentance, humility, and profound faith.

“Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much.” — Luke 7:47

According to Luther, forgiveness is the seed of love, not its consequence. Mary’s deep devotion was born from the grace of forgiveness. Jesus underlines this truth in verse 50: “… your faith has saved you, go in peace.”

Mary Magdalene: A Lutheran Beacon

In line with the Augsburg Confession, we honored saints by:
– Thanking God for their witness and example.
– Imitating their faith, not their merits.
– Following their works in our own lives.

Mary Magdalene shines as an embodiment of these principles, holding steadfast to Christ in both sorrow and joy. She followed Him to the cross and was first in proclaiming His victory over death. She is remembered not for flawlessness, but for her unwavering devotion—redeemed by grace.

A Prayer for Guidance

Almighty God,
Thy Son, Jesus Christ, restored Mary Magdalene to health and called her to be the first witness of His resurrection. Heal us from all our infirmities, and call us to know Thee in the power of Thy Son’s unending life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

A Sweet Tradition: Sharing Magdalenas

On St. Mary Magdalene’s feast day, traditional bakers in Spain prepare Magdalenas—small lemon-infused cakes—celebrating her transformation from sorrow to joy. Their rounded tops symbolize resurrection hope and the sweetness of forgiveness. In parts of Italy, particularly Siena and Sicily, special treats shaped like teardrops or the letter “M” are made to honor her devotion and repentance.
