On August 16, 2026, Michael Copp and I traveled to Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri, to begin training for the Specific Ministry Pastor (SMP) program, where I will serve as Michael’s mentor as he prepares to become a pastor of families and adults.

During the intensive gathering, we spent time together getting an overview of pastoral ministry before breaking into separate tracks. While the students focused on theological foundations, the mentors trained in coaching techniques, pastoral formation skills, and practical role-play. A major takeaway was learning how to guide without asking direct “why” questions, helping students arrive at conclusions and take initiative on their own. We also committed to mutual vows of confidentiality.

With this step, our congregation officially becomes a teaching church. Moving forward, our priorities include:

Whole-Counsel Discipleship: We are walking alongside Michael as he focuses on the entire counsel of God, including reading through the Bible in a year and deeply integrating discipleship practices emphasized by the seminary.

Protecting School Responsibilities: We will protect his day-to-day school duties to avoid placing an undue burden or cost on the school. We are identifying specific afternoons where he can join me for pastoral calls and practical ministry formation.

Close Coordination: Principal Schleicher and I will meet bi-weekly to ensure Michael’s schedule remains balanced and sustainable. Strengthening Staff Coaching: This training gave me practical tools I previously lacked. It has already helped me recognize how to better support and coach Britany, enabling us to work together more effectively so our youth ministry continues to thrive. There are great things afoot coming out of our week in St. Louis. I have been praying deeply over this next chapter, and I ask for your continued prayers and support as we walk with Michael and help form the pastoral leadership our church and community need.
