We had a very enjoyable class last Sunday studying Jude in “Short Lessons in God’s Word”. We left with a new focus on looking out for false prophets, which are all around us today. That’s not why I’m writing today. Jude in verse 11 refers to those who “abandoned themselves for the sake of gain to Balaam’s error” (Num 22 – 24). I will let you read this on your own. Briefly, what transpires is Balak wants Balaam to curse the people of God. He offers him the world on a platter. God came to him at night and told him to only do what I tell you.

Good old Balaam plugged his ears and saddled his donkey and went with the princes of Moab…Now, I’m thinking, if God came to me in a dream, I would be scared to roll over in my bed, let alone mount a donkey. Still though, that is not what amazed me. God did get angry, and he still planned to stop Balaam. He sent the angel of the Lord, with a drawn sword, to block the road.

The smart one in the group, Balaam’s donkey sees the angel and stops. Balaam, blind to the Lord’s angel, strikes the donkey to get her moving. They move to the left and right. Still the donkey can’t and won’t pass. He strikes her two more times.

Then the donkey says, “What have I done that you have struck me these three times?” All of you know I own a rabbit; she’s never spoken to me. If ever she, does you better have 911 on speed dial. I look at Balaam’s reaction and I am mystified. He just starts a conversation with her. No surprise, it was like a daily thing.

Balaam still does not get the point until God reveals the angel to Balaam. Fun part, the angel asks the same question, “why have you struck your donkey three times?” The faithful donkey was trying to protect Balaam and, as the angel stated, save his life. (Again, no surprise on the part of Balaam that this angel just appears.) He does get the picture now. He acknowledges his sin and goes on to do as God has instructed him.

So what is my point? Keep your eyes open to the presence of God. If he is blocking your brother’s path – make him aware and protect him. Walk along with him and remind him of what he first believed. God through Christ can rectify a wrong and still use you and him in the battle for the truth.

I thank Bob Symmank for being our leader last week. This week our “Short Lesson in God’s Word” will be in 1 John. Please join us.
