Walk past Mrs. Neal’s second grade classroom recently and you may hear clapping, stomping, and a whole lot of singing. That is the Verb Jingle, and our students have it down!

The jingle comes from the Shurley English program, which teaches the parts of speech through short songs set to rhythm and motion. This one packs in more than you might expect. Our second graders are not just singing that a verb is an action word. They are singing about two kinds of verbs: the action verb, which tells what the subject does, and the linking verb, which shows a state of being instead. That distinction trips up plenty of older students, so it is a real accomplishment to hear seven and eight year olds rattle it off with confidence.

They have worked hard on this one and are eager for you to hear it.
