Finding Connection, One Car-Line Cone at a Time

At car line, one bright gold cone has become a happy coincidence for our students. As part of the school uniform, many students wear gold — one of Epiphany’s school colors — and it just so happens that the cone Mikayla Eifert is assigned to matches. For this 4th grade teacher, who has taught at Epiphany for eight years, that small connection is a fun detail, but being at that cone is about something much bigger than the color.

“I will say I just love being at a car line cone. I’d be happy at any color,” Mrs. Eifert shared. “The cone allows me to get to know students I haven’t had yet and catch up with students I don’t have anymore.”

Those few minutes each day, waiting for cars to pull up, have become one of her favorite parts of the day. Sometimes she has a question of the day that she asks each student. Sometimes it’s an informal poll about something fun. And sometimes she simply knows a student’s interests well enough to ask about them by name — a small gesture that makes a big impact.

Why is this newsworthy? Maybe it’s simply a reminder that community is often built in the everyday moments that make our children smile — and that a teacher’s dedication to knowing and caring for students doesn’t end when the school bell rings. It continues at the car line cone, one conversation at a time.
