8th grade U.S. History students recently brought the English colonies to life through an immersive role-playing activity. As part of their unit on colonial America, students were transformed into colonists for the day — each assigned a job, a political affiliation, and a specific colony to call home.

8th Grade History

Students got to choose their own colonial names, and the creativity didn’t disappoint! Among the standout personas: Nigel Fairfax, a farmer from Massachusetts; Ebenezer O’Brien, an apothecary from Connecticut; and Anne Pettypool, a governor from New Hampshire.

By stepping into the shoes of colonists with different occupations and beliefs, students gained a hands-on understanding of daily life, regional differences, and the political landscape of early America. It was a fun and memorable way to make history come alive in the classroom.
